Police in standoff with 2 000 people in Durban CBD

West Street (Dr Pixley KaSeme Street) closed after a standoff between locals and Pakistani shop owners, says Jeff Wicks. Watch.

We understand that Pakistani shop owners warded off looters and then people started stoning cars and shops, Wicks says.

Police are tying to disperse a crowd of nearly 2 000 people who are getting aggressive.

We are seeing people arming themselves with sticks. The road remains closed to traffic with a large police presence.

Shop owners have barricaded their stores expecting a run on goods while police try and appease the crowd.
